Nothing, really

"Whaddja do all day?" my oldest asked me.

"Nothing really."  I answered.

For some reason, I didn't sleep well last night.  I didn't go to bed until midnight, and I was abruptly startled from a sound sleep at 3:14.  I have NO idea what woke me, I was just AWAKE. I think I was just beyond wiped out from the stress of the day.  A wakeful state that I rested in until 5:00, at which point I fell back to sleep.  When my alarm went off at 6:03 - not 6:00, or 6:05, don't ask me why I set it for such a weird time - my body didn't want to rise.  After I delivered all of the kids to school, I came home to work out.  I was already dressed in my yoga gear and planned to do two cd's from the set that The Hubster bought me - Turbo Jam.

Let me go on record as saying that I most emphatically did NOT want this set of dvd's.  I have Winsor Pilates, Billy Blanks Boot camp, NY City ballet workout, and about 70 other varieties of exercise tapes.  He really, really wanted to get them for me.

And I'm totally eating my words right now, because I swore up and down that I would not like these dvds.  And, um, yeah, I do.  Especially the turbo sculpt and the ab work.  My body is soooo sore, and I can see definition in my arms already. So I had planned to do two of them today, and yet, when I got home I was so drained from the day before that I knew, deep down, that it wasn't happening. SO I thought I'd undertake the grungiest job of the Masses household.

I cleaned the playroom.

Oh, man, was that an aerobic workout.  A huge bag of garbage, three boxes of thrift store, and all of the pieces of the games put back together where they belonged.  I moved the sofas and vacuumed behind them, moved the desk and found shoes and socks and pencils.  I cleaned out toyboxes and hung up coats.  I moved beds around upstairs - I didn't find the now TWO pairs of glasses that are missing, nor did I find my RING, but I found some other things that were gone.  I pulled out winter clothes for Riley and packed up the summer stuff.  I packed three boxes to send to friends.  I did all of this because I knew that if I sat down, I'd go to sleep and that's not a good plan with the dynamic duo around.

I was so glad that it started to rain, because all of the soccer was cancelled, both for practice tonight and games tomorrow.  Allegra will still play, because advanced teams play unless it is a hurricane.  I'm planning to be in bed by 10, as soon as The Lake House finishes.  I'm watching the movie with Allegra as a special, since I won't let her go to the boy/girl party that one of her class mates is giving.  We each just ate about 6 chocolate chip cookies, and I'm hoping that she's over her hysteria.

See, she REALLY wanted to go to this party, but I didn't want her to for a number of reasons. One, I wasn't certain it'd be adequately supervised. Two, the girl hosting the party wasn't nice to my daughter last year, although Allegra claims that she's nicer this year.  The two of them were in the counselors office numerous times last year, along with three other girls who were going to be at this party as well. Three, I don't think that 11 years old is old enough for a boy/girl party.  I'm probably old fashioned.  Four, and this is TOTALLY petty, it's far from here and it's cold and wet and I have no desire to drive all the way out there with the little ones.  Selfish, I know. Maybe it wasn't the best decision for her, but it was for me.  She's happy now, though, and just made a comment that I found interesting.

"Mom?  Was that hormones earlier?  When I was cranky and yelling at you?  When I told you that you were the worst mother ever?  Was it just the hormones talking?"  "Yes,"  I said.  "Boy, do I hate hormones," she said.  "They make my head hurt."

Mine too.

Thanks for your lovely comments.  I wasn't fishing for them, I swear I wasn't. (I'm totally cracking up at the comments about my shiny floors.  They were shiny when we moved in here, four years ago on Tuesday, Oct 31.  I've not done one thing to them beyond a swiffer wetjet.  In fact, I usually have one of the kids do it.) Did you notice that I didn't ask ONE question of you in this entry?  Oh, crap, I just did.

I *hate* when I feel that exhausted. Glad you found something productive to do.
I just watched "The Lake House" today, too. Not bad, but so inplausible (un?). I like Sandra Bullock.
Sweet dd.

My alarm is ALWAYS set for an odd time. Usually 6:01 or 6:41 or 7:16. I seem to like the "one minute after a normal time" thing. :)

Maybe it's psychological that I can sleep that extra minute. Whatever it is, I've been doing it that way for over 20 years. Although now that I don't have a job outside of the home, the number of times I hit snooze has increased significantly!

My alarm is set that way because that is where it stopped when I took my finger off of the button and I don't have an issue with it = so I haven't changed it.... I've had a whole week of the blahs. I think I'm waiting for the cooler weather to set in so we can actually go outside again. I really believe I get cabin fever in the summer!! Friends from "up North" are starting to come back - so I should get happier - and more motivated soon.

You sure get a lot of work done for being exhausted. More than I get done when I have energy!!!!! Power to the MOMS!!

I definitely agree with your decision on the boy/girl party. My daughter is 15 and I've heard from friends who allowed their boys or girls to go to those parties and something inappropriate has always happened. The rule here is that if both boys and girls are invited she can only go if it's a public event such as bowling. If it's at someone else's house she can't go. I would allow her if it were one of the boys from church whose parents I know and trust completely but that's the only exception. Her last "boyfriend" broke up with her after she didn't attend his birthday party at his house. She was disappointed but not too much so because she knows the rule and this one she even understands because she also hears what goes on. A few days after his party she came to tell me the same sort of thing happened at his party too. I think she was relieved not to have been a part. If she matures enough, she'll be dating next year. She already knows we are encouraging "group dating." So, no I don't find you old fashioned at all. Sometimes old fashioned just makes more sense in protecting our kids from themselves.

"Boy, do I hate hormones," she said. "They make my head hurt."

Ha!! Brilliant obsevation, Allegra. I will be sharing this with my 11 year old daughter today. Both of us seem to have hormones that make our heads hurt on a regular basis. 8^)

I'd like to know more about Turbo Jam----how coordinated do you need to be? Does the time go by quickly? Is it a whole body workout?
When you say you do 2 at a time, which two? How long are they?
Is the warm-up boring? What intensity would you guesstimate them to be?

Ugh, so glad I don't have to decide about boy/girl parties just yet... our oldest is 5 so just starting to deal with all sorts of kids at school this year. She actually has her first birthday party tomorrow afternoon with new kids, I am going with her and leaving the others at home with dh, so we'll see how that goes. I had one of those no energy days on Thursday, fortunately that's a slower day around here on the schedule so I could indulge my sluggish ways.

I agree about the party. I kept my 13 year old home from a party last night too. It was *all* the cheerleaders (except her, obviously), dressed in very sexy costumes, in a house that I don't know. With *parental supervision* of somesort.. who knows what that means to other parents. Oh, and the kicker? The party giver's older sister, a Jr. in High School... it was a combined party for both girls! No way do I want my 8th grader at a party with High Schoolers. Dd's friend (not a cheerleader) was one of the only ones not invited, so dd invited her over... mall shopping and a sleepover and movie! I am proud of dd for making a great decision instead of just going along with the peer pressure!

About Me

  • WANTED, Carmen, mom to the Masses, for dangerous undertakings inside and outside the home. Last seen with her partner The Hubster, and six accomplices (Nikolas, 16, Allegra, 13, Mackenzie 11, Gabriel 8, Emma 6 and Riley, 4). This fugitive is considered armed (with epi pens and inhalers) and dangerous, especially when she hasn't had her morning coffee. She is particularly difficult to recognize due to a recent 80 pound weight loss (size 18-20 down to 2-4!), and has been known to hide beneath large piles of laundry. She's a fan of running races and can be found reading, lifting weights, practicing capoeira or running to the store for milk. ( Read more here.)
