Light 'n' fluffy
I took TEN trips to school today. My butt is going to be shaped just like the car's seat. I'm too tired to explain it all, but maybe tomorrow. But I've got a question for you.
What flavors are strongly "Holiday" for you? Eggnog? Gingerbread? Praline? Minty chocolate? Pumpkin?
Do you like them?
I HATE eggnog with a passion that will never ever die. Love minty chocolate, pumpkin and gingerbread. OH! and buttery sugar cookies with sprinkles.
Lay it on me.

Gingerbread all the way for me. Love the smell of gingerbread. And pumpkin isn't half bad either.

Oddly enough, for me, it's cinnamon. I'm sure it is because my mother always makes homemade cinnamon rolls that we eat after church and before the gift opening (this order was reversed when we were young)on Christmas morning.

I like eggnog, in moderation. The smell of cookies baking and cinnamon are also my favorites, I guess that's probably why my perfume smells like vanilla.

DEFINITELY minty chocolate, as defined by a candy that is harder to find each year: "Minty Bells!" Also...
sugar cookies
peppermint
cinnamon
gingerbread
I'm noticing a trend, in that all my flavors are sweet ones. Heh. And no, eggnog nuh-uh, no way. I think it's the NAME. Grossgrossgross.

Gingerbread, as in GINGERBREAD LATTE! mmmm...

All of the above.
Except every year, I crave eggnog and then drink myself sick of the stuff. Thank goodness it's only available seasonally.

Potatos and onions

My Grandma's Fruit Cake (Its a white one with no dates or rasins or heavy spices. Just a kind of citrusy cake with the candied cherries and pineapple as well as pecans), eggnog, Lemon Merangue Pie, chocolate merangue pie and coconut cream pie. All were made by gramma every year ONLY at the holidays.

Definitely Gingerbread. I'm all for Starbucks Gingerbreat Latte. Wish they'd sell that year round!!
Peanutbutter balls (coated in chocolate)
Peanut Clusters
Pumpkin (Pies and Rolls)
and even those cans of little butter cookies with sugar sprinkles...yum!
Grandma's Molasses cookies.

peanut butter oatmeal fudgies (you know....the no-bake easy kind) but it simply must be in the pumpkin jar in November and then switch to the Christmas Tree jar in December. I make it every year and it disappears within 1 hour of making it.
Love that stuff. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Eggnog is nasty. G-NASTY....

Shortbread.
Dark chocolate.
Carmel.
Whipped cream.
The pumpkin/cinammon are more fall oriented for me. I also am a not-fan of eggnog.

Way to kill a girl's resolve there, Carmen! For me, it's peppermint (especially with chocolate, mmmm...), tamales, biscochitos (a shortbread cookie), rum balls (love opening the container and getting the hit of rum aroma), and those pomander things-the oranges stuck with cloves. Ahhh, that smells like Christmas.

Peppermint
Cinnamon
Pumpkin
MMmmmmmMmmmmMMmmmm. Oh! And the popcorn and cranberry scent when we string it up for the trees!

Cinnamon... I make a wonderful cinnamon cake which everyone loves. Gingerbread and the smell of home baking. Mulled wine and warm mince pies with brandy cream or brandy butter. Do Americans eat mince pies with brandy butter?? I have no idea!

Love Love Love: Eggnog, Cinnamon, Gingerbread, Spiced Cider, Sugar Cookie
Hate Hate Hate: Peppermint (why do my children insist on buying more and more peppermint candles for me??) I also rilly rilly dislike that "Holiday Pine" or whatever it is that is supposed to simulate Christmas trees/wreaths.

Gingerbread, Evergreen, and Sugar Cookies.
I always make gingerbread boy ornaments for our trees. I don't like the Evergreen oils, I like fresh evergreen. But I can't have live greenery in the house because of my son's allergy so I buy real wreaths and swags to decorate outdoors so I get the scent whenever I go in/out of the doors !
By the way - I just picked up some fresh swags with sprigs of holly for $5.99 each at Trader Joes (at least they're that price here in NE Ohio)

Hi! I havent commented before, but I knew what I wanted to say in response to this one.
For me, it's clementines; we always got one at the toe of our stocking on Christmas. We just got some this week for the first time this year, and, upon smelling them, I told my mom that my kids will never have clementines at any other time of the year other than Xmas, so that they will have the same associations I do. hehe.
also, though I hate it too, egg nog is one, gingerbread as well- actually, anything cakey or bready baking works. Pumpkin. Peppermint. Those cheap little sugary milk chocolates in foil. The smell of the fabric of our stockings!
...I just realized i could go on and on (more than I already have) so Im gonna stop here.
:)

I kinda like eggnog although I will never buy it or drink more then a cup of it the entire holiday season because I only love it in small doses. I like mint chocolate year round and while I don't dislike candycanes they do get tiresome after awhile.

I adore mint and caramel in just about any form. I love the smell of real gingerbread but I can't handle the fake stuff. Pumpkin I love in everything but Lattes at starbucks. Not sure why but it's gross. And I don't even like the name eggnog.

Eggnog makes me retch. Blech.
The flavor of Christmas is:
Chocolate and Peppermint
Toffee (mom's homemade)
Pasta e Fagiole (Christmas Eve staple in our house)

I can go through my spice cabinet and they pretty much all do the trick. Well, not the curry.
Gingerbread
Pumpkin pie
Roasting turkey
Sweet potatoes
Snow (it does TOO have a smell)
Bayberry (I don't know what that is in real life, it's a candle scent though)
Fake tree smell - I grew up with it and liked it when young, dislike it now - but it still says "holiday smell" to my brain
Scotch tape
Ripped wrapping paper

Definately pumpkin, but new this year is the peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks - OMG, that is sooo good and feels so much like a holiday to me :)
Posted by:Christina | November 29, 2006 at 09:24 PM
For some reason, I no longer like the taste of egg nog. I bought a carton over the weekend with great anticipation only to find it disgusting when I drank some. I guess I should be happy-one less high calorie holiday treat to be tempted by.

I love all the baking.... and I guess that's where my "smells" come from!
Peanut butter bon bons
Chocolate mint brownies
cranberry bread
pumpkin bread
sugar cookies
cinnamon bubble bread
*YUM*

Wow did you get an awesome response on this one or what? I can't even get through them all! But what fun to remember smells/flavors from Christmases past...Mom made much different (and more) candy & cookies than I do. Some of the flavors that say "childhood Christmas" to me are:
almond butter cookies
peppernuts (cookies w/cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, pepper & cardamon, plus anise oil & molasses)
fudge (smooth & creamy, no nuts!)
chocolate-covered peanut butter rice krispie bon bons (talk about eating yourself sick)
Now I make only a couple treats every year. I would make more but then I would just eat them because I have no will power. Hopefully my kids will have memories of:
decorated gingerbread boys & girls (I have THE most delicious recipe)
Mexican wedding cookies
iced sugar cookie cut-outs
On Christmas morning the smells in our house are egg strata, buttermilk pancakes, fruit salad (cantaloupe, pineapple & kiwi), cinnamon rolls, and special coffee.
I could totally do without pumpkin pie. Pumpkin is only for Thanksgiving. So is turkey. Gotta have Heavenly Ham on Christmas. LOVE eggnog, with or without the rum. I love starlight peppermints but don't like candy canes! Weird.
That one post from "Linds" about mince pie with brandy butter sounds VERY intriguing. And like "Groovecatmom" I love the smell of oranges and cloves.
