Help Buy Me A Coffee

« Mission Monday | Main | You talk to your mother with that mouth? »

Can you help?

I'm applying for a writing gig.  (Again.  I'm thinking that the twelveth time MUST be the charm, eh?)

I need to supply four essays and that's where you all come in.  What have you read here that you really loved/hated/nodded in sympathy to/commiserated with?  Do you have an entry that I wrote that you just love?

Play along with me here, ok?  I'd really appreciate it, and so would my checkbook.

By the same token, you can tell me what you think I should NEVER apply to write about.  I'm contemplating either a large family/parenting slot or something to do with weight loss. You can use the search button that's on the side over there, or just give me the idea behind the entry and I'll do my best to locate it.  I've got a few ideas rumbling around - oh, wait, that might be my dinner......

I think the one where you and Riley had your quiet moment at the end of a wicked day was a good one. (but I know little about writing). :)

I like when you write about things most of us can relate to--but not formulate the words ourselves. Things that envelope all women, not just the ones who have large families. Does that make sense?
You are not as funny as Erma Bombeck, but you have the same folksy 'common sense' that binds most women.

I read your blog all the time, though I seldom comment. I really enjoy your writing and hope that you get the gig. Here's a link to the story about Riley. "A Single Moment of Piece." I think you should use it!

Wow, I pretty much think *all* of your blog entries are quality writing. This isn't necessarily my favorite, but one story I remember is your re-telling of Frank taking the girls to Sears and one of them pooped in their panties, etc., etc. Or maybe that was you? I just remember the basics; I was laughing a lot.
Your exercise stuff is great, too.

I've been reading you since I started my own blog, which I think is about 3 years now? So it's hard for me to remember which posts over the years have made me LOL.

I just know that when we entered Emily's Win-A-Blog contest, and you came in 2nd and I came in 3rd, I told my husband, "That girl with all the kids should have won. Her posts were HILARIOUS." If that helps.

This one stuck with me:

There was another one, I think the hubster was out with the girls and there was explosive poop...something like that. I couldn't find the post.

I love your witty retellings of dreadful kid stories the best, obviously.

Oh, the recent "Moment of Peace" one came to mind immediately, and I see it came to everyone else's mind, too. That was top notch. You are one of my favorite bloggers, and I think the overall quality of your writing speaks for itself, if you just read the blog for a while. For me, only occasionally does a particular post stand out from all the rest, like the one about you and Riley did, because they are ALL good.

If it's worth anything at all, which it isn't, but I used to be a tech writer in a previous life, and I'd have hired you in a heartbeat. Good luck!

I absolutely loved your reminiscence of figuring out the cool stuff to wear (from a book written in the 50's):

sorry it took me so long to comment. Yesterday was crazy.

I liked your post on traveling ( I believe over on Larger Families), and one you did on taking kids to the doctors because it was all the same stuff that happens to me every.single.time. Those were the ones I related to, and I'm sure many more moms could, too.

I agree with others who talked about the moment of peace with Riley. I also liked the post about all the doctor visits. Also - there was a great post about how little you need to start running & exercising.

Really, I just like your writing. :) I think you'd do very well with a gig about weight loss, larger family/parenting, or special needs parenting.

Wasn't there one about why you keep all that stuff in your van, and how now your husband doesn't mind? It may be the Sears exploding poop story other people have mentioned. I just remember it made me laugh really hard.

I appreciate seeing/reading about how you o-r-g-a-n-i-z-e all the stuff that three step-children, 6 children, 2 parents, and a partrige in a pear tree need throughout the year. I got hooked on your blog reading the entry about the shoes/boots/hats storage in the garage on the way into the house.

I agree with all the comments above etc... Another one comes to mind and it was about your visit to a neighbor's house who was having a garage sale or something. Not sure why that one stayed with me, but it was something in your observations that struck me as very honest. That is what I love most about your writing. The honesty of it without being too cutesy. Hard to find that particular sweet spot, but you do it often. Good luck with the job. Hope you get around to your novel too!

About Me

  • WANTED, Carmen, mom to the Masses, for dangerous undertakings inside and outside the home. Last seen with her partner The Hubster, and six accomplices (Nikolas, 16, Allegra, 13, Mackenzie 11, Gabriel 8, Emma 6 and Riley, 4). This fugitive is considered armed (with epi pens and inhalers) and dangerous, especially when she hasn't had her morning coffee. She is particularly difficult to recognize due to a recent 80 pound weight loss (size 18-20 down to 2-4!), and has been known to hide beneath large piles of laundry. She's a fan of running races and can be found reading, lifting weights, practicing capoeira or running to the store for milk. ( Read more here.)
