Windshield, meet bug
When I was sick, I took a trip to Walgreens to purchase medication for myself. While weighing the merits of Sudafed against Mucinex against Theraflu, I spotted a display of cereals. My kids love cereal, and so I took a detour to the display. I saw boxes of Little Einsteins and boxes of Disney Princess. I was skeptical about the nutritional value of the cereals, as I'm pretty picky about what I buy. Looking at the labels, I saw that there was no high fructose corn syrup, whole grains were included, the sugar grams were less than 10 - that was always my mom's level, and it has stuck with me. They were on "special", 2 boxes for $5. I wasn't feeling well, I knew that it'd make breakfast easier on me, even though they were wildly colored, and so I bought them. Both cereals were huge hits.
Tuesday, I went to Wal-Mart for groceries, and I saw the same boxes. The cereal I'd bought last week was long gone, and so I decided to buy a new set - both varities were equally popular. This time, the price rang up at 2 boxes for $3. I bought two, feeling smug and virtuous. I'd beaten the Walgreens price!
Last night, Allegra had an awful asthma attack. Thinking back, I should have known that something was up; someone always flares if we have a wild temperature change like yesterday - from 80 to 40 in two hours. Her attack was really, really awful, and I called the pediatrician. He called in a prescription for steroids, and I set out to purchase them at 12:15 - actually, it wasn't last night, but this morning. I went to Walgreens. I know, I think my paycheck should just be sent to places beginning in "Wal". I saw the same boxes, now priced at 2 for $2. I bought 4. The Hubster told me that I should wait until next week, when someone else gets sick and then the cereal will probably be 50 cents a box, and then buy the store out.
____________
Tonight was a night, though, of missed cues and never being where I needed to when I need to be there. Because Allegra was sick, it put a crimp in my evening. It didn't help that it was pouring rain and the temperature was just over freezing. Mackenzie had an irish dance performance, my boys had scouts at the same time, and Riley NEEDED to sleep. My mother volunteered to take Mackenzie to her show, my son's scout leader picked the boys up, and I put Riley to bed. She went to sleep easily enough, I left Allegra watching SuperSize Me, put Emma into bed (crying AGAIN). I wasn't sure where I was going for the show and got lost. I arrived at the end and missed the entire thing, kissed my daughter goodbye as she left with my mother for a sleepover, and went to Scouts. Where I was late, walked in to my older son having troubles controlling my younger, and the reality that I had, once again, forgotten my son's scout book. He was upset with me, my older son was upset with me,I'd had to pee for two hours, my daughter was upset because I'd missed her dance - basically, I'd managed to miss every activity tonight.
Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug - tonight, I was definitely the bug.

I get that.
Man I get that.

Dang, me too (*waves antennae weakly*). If its any consolation (in a company-loving misery kind of way) I have spent over $300 in the past two days on healthcare for just ONE of my kids, and for all the good it's doing I coulda blown it on liquor. *SIGH*

Your windshield vs. bug analogy describes my day perfectly. Today, I was the bug.
But now I wonder if my Walgreen's has that same deal on cereal. No corn syrup, low sugar and a dollar a box? Sounds good to me.

Sorry it was such a rough day. At least you can be happy the cereal was on sale?

when I was a kid, my parents would never by the FUN cereal. Dad used to always say, "It'd be more nutritous to eat the cardboard box it comes in." We got Cheerios and Rice Krispies and Shredded Wheat (w/out the frosting) but we just dumped tablespoonfuls of sugar on top of it anyway.

gah. I haven't been online much lately, so sorry you've been the bug for a while! :( hope things improve soon.
I hate being the bug. It's been going on for too long. I want to be the windshield, even if it's only for a little while.

I know you gave lots of info in this post, but you had my sympathy as soon as you mentioned a kid on oral steroids. That's the pits man.
At least you have the cereal.
