Today is the 6th of January. The Sixth Day of the New Year.
So far, we have had one car with two flat tires. One vehicle that won't stay started. One van with $3K of body damage. One broken Garage door. My boxing gloves have disappeared. One kid with Bacterial Conjunctivitis. One kid that just randomly got sick.
I'm done.
Can I call a do over on 2011? Please?
I hope your new year is going better than mine.

Your 2011 sounds kinda like my 2010.

That's now a good start at all. Praying that the other 51 weeks will be filled with wonderful blessings.

boxing gloves are... big. (mine are) That's the one thing on your list that is most surprising to me.
After this first week, the rest of your year is going to ROCK by comparison!

Your January sounds like my November. Our stove broke and couldn't be repaired so had to buy a new one. That was followed by 1 year flatscreen(3 weeks after warranty expired)shitting the bed. My car failed inspection, 1100 dollars worth of repairs, furnace needed repairs. My son was sideswiped in a car accident resulting in that car needed to be in the shop!.....It got to the point I was afraid to be near an appliance for fear it would self combust. Hang in there!!

I found my wedding ring. Since losing a bit of weight it is a little loose and it slipped from my hand. Spent the better part of a day (I know, not very long) looking for it. Found it in the washing machine.

Oh no, that is not a good start at all! 2011 has been okay here, nothing big went on. Thankfully. The last part of 2010 was rough!

Nope: started the year with a stomach bug that hit my husband, son and me, and son never recovered -- developed borderline pneumonia and has been home all week. Had to call a friend who's an eye doc today since my daughter's eye was swelling shut with debris in it. Remember "There's Something About Mary?" There's a line in it "Each day is better than the next," which has summed up our start to the new year ... as I sniffle, coming down with a cold. I say f*%k it -- next week, I start again. The New Year can begin on Jan. 10, right? RIGHT?

I'm with Rox: start the New Year on a yet-to-be-set datewhen things start to look up. Which hopefully they will very soon.
My New Year started with a double ear infection (me) and a failure to get a doctor's appointment because it was New Year, followed by double-ear deafness and my husband cooking dinner for our New Year guests (actually, now I come to think of it, that was a nice bonus!) while I sat on the sofa feeling lousy. Then my husband got ill and took to his bed, and my car cost £450 (whatever that is in $...$700?) to get through its MOT test. But today my ears have gone pop and I feel like a new woman, so my New Year starts today, January 7th!
Happy New Year, and hope yours starts soon!

NO FAIR! I think a do-over is called for.
We're just having transmission issues on our minivan. Yuck. And because the husband and I decided that it's MY minivan, it's now MY problem. He'll consult, but he uses the bus and his bike to get to work, so the van is my territory now.
This probably isn't much comfort, but a friend and I were commiserating yesterday over our SAD, and we decided that this life is not the time we enter into our rest--that happens after we're dead. So the fact that crap keeps happening just means we're not dead yet.

I have to agree with Emily C. These things might seem bad at the time, but at least you're not dead, and can still take the bad stuff with all the wonderful things you get to enjoy in this life. So try to look at things from a half-full glass, and they WILL improve.
BTW, I hope this doesn't point out my extended absence, but your new side-bar head shot looks very good on you..
Happy New Year!
