Discovery Channel Hydro Greenhouse

I wanted to put a picture in here of this, but typepad crashes on me ever.single.time I try to post a picture.  So, you get no pic from me.

The lovely ladies over at The Parent Bloggers asked who'd be interested in trying out another round of Discovery Channel toys.  I think I broke a vital part of my body trying to get to the email in time.  Picture me doing a Kojak from "Welcome Back, Kotter".  I love the Discovery Channel Toys and have been a huge fan for a long time now.

The Hydro Greenhouse is a great idea.  A truly great idea.  Unfortunately, it almost ended up in my garbage can.  I found it difficult to assemble - the plastic that makes up the bulk of the case was flimsy and the top kept popping off. I was completely annoyed with the entire thing.  No matter how many times i'd put it back together, one of my kids would tap it or touch it, and it'd fall apart again.

Thank goodness, my husband jumped in and taped the entire thing back together when the top refused to stay connected.  My oldest daughter was mortified that I might toss it, and she took over the entire project.  That is a huge bonus - the greenhouse was easy enough that a 13 year old could assemble and execute the entire thing unsupervised.

Once we located some seeds - a little frustration came from the fact that there were no seeds included, although I know that is so you can grow whatever you want - the seeds went right in and we sat the greenhouse on the counter.  I had no hope that it would work.

Three days went by.  Four day.  And then, on the fifth day, we looked over and saw sprouts.  Two and three inch tall sprouts.  Success!  The greenhouse watered and fed itself with no attention from us at all.  The kit came with enough nutrient to last for two weeks, and our flowers grew beautifully.  A cute bonus was the addition of tiny tools - a hoe, a rake and a shovel.  My kids LOVED those more than life itself, I think.

I think that I'm going to try cherry tomatoes next.

I'd recommend this product to anyone with curious kids, those that like to grow stuff, and I'd caution you to make sure you place it higher than your kids can reach, and keep a role of tape nearby.
