I'm speaking, of course, about The Biggest Loser. It began again tonight, and, for a change from last season, I'm liking it. I didn't like the last season at all. I know that the premise of the show is, of course, competition. That's the draw of it. In seasons past, the competition was not cut throat, at least not until the end. The last season, though - it was bitter and nasty and I didn't even watch the last four weeks - it just really made me uncomfortable.
What' I've seen so far, though, seems a bit more "We all have an issue and we need to work together, so let's cheer each other on." I don't know if it'll last, but it was a nicer episode than any of the last season. For now, I'll keep watching.
What was really illuminating for me was watching the weigh ins. This group of people is the heaviest of any season. Which goes along with what Bob said in the beginning, and what, coincidentally, I heard Dr. Oz say - America is the heaviest it has ever been. We are the fattest nation. I liked watching it with my kids - it really hit close to home for me. So many times, I just want a cookie or a bowl of pasta, and I think to myself, "It's just one bowl. I really work hard, I can cheat once in a while." And it's true - one bowl isn't a big deal. But it's a slippery slope, and one bowl can lead to another and another - I certainly didn't plan on weighing over 200 pounds before I was 35. I truly didn't see it coming, like so many people.
Are you a fan of The Biggest Loser? What did you think of the first episode?

I was hesitant to watch the show last night because I was so annoyed and unhappy with the last season. I wrote the show several times via email and let them know it too!! But I think so far this season is very supportive of each other, and I like the twist that one partner had to go home. I think it will make them work that much harder! I did the first day of the sit up challenge--not so easy!! Where is the push up challenge?

Like you I didn't like last season and I think I only caught a few episodes. My 12 year old daughter and I watched last night and I think we are really going to like this season. I hope so anyway. It can be so inspirational if it is a good season.

I'm in agreement with everyone here -- it was a lot more positive than last season. I thought the doctor's visits were especially powerful. I had no idea that fat began to build up in organs after a certain point. Quite eye-opening!

I am also in agreement with everyone here. Last season was just mean and nasty. I did watch the finale, but I missed a lot of shows in between and wasn't even very upset about it, where in seasons past, I was determined to watch all the episodes. This season is shaping up to be much better. I look forward to watching it again.

I just got back from a trip to England. I spent two weeks traveling around Deal, Dover, Rochester, Canterbury, London, and some other small places. About four days into the trip, my husband and I realized that there were very few obese people. Our theory is that although fish and chips are a staple in England, people walk to get them. We don't walk in America. We jump in our cars...and sit behind the wheel...and drive...and take 20 minutes to go through McDonald's to buy a Big Mac when we could have walked to Kroger and in 10 minutes bought a salad.

I love The Biggest Loser; I didn't like some of last season's contestants because they WERE game playing, but I loved the outcome. The girl who won deserved the win.
The intro to this season...Jillian and Bob are screaming at America, and right at the moment one of them says "put down the ice cream while you watch" (or something like that) I was popping a Milk Dud into my mouth. Heh. I got served.

I love the Biggest Loser, but last season was so disheartening to watch. I don't watch shows like Survivor or Big Brother, because they seem kinda hateful. TBL was always different - it was inspirational, even though I know it's not realistic to think you'll lose weight like the contestants. Last season the people involved were so unlikeable it was difficult to keep tuning in.
Thankfully, this season seems to be better. Yay!

I didn't like the contestants (not all but I'm sure you all know which group I'm referring to) but still loved the show. I loved that the underdog won and mopped up the floor with the pot stirring snerts.
I do hope this season keeps a better tone. I fell asleep and didn't see how the 'twist' with 9 going home played out. I need to get over the web page and review.
I too watch it the kids and would love it always ended at 9pm est as it's hard for my littles to walk away from the tube when it's not over for another hour (especially when they know I'll fall asleep as soon as they leave the show and not know how it ended)

I'm excited about this season. I think most of the contestants are there for the change, not the cash. I'm hopeful we won't see a "Vicky" emerge!
There is also a new show on Liftime called Diet Tribe. Its a group of 5 friends working with a personal trainer but otherwise living their normal lives. It started Monday. I would recommend it.

I had never watched Biggest Loser, but it came on while I was my friend's place Tuesday night. I had only intended to stay 15 minutes, and I wound up standing for the whole two hours. I'm hooked, but one thing I didn't like was the fact that they sent home half of most of the couples at the end. That seemed like such a low blow, because any chance they had of staying and getting healthier was dashed in the first week. I wonder how many of them will have gained back all or most of the weight they lost before they are reunited. Guess it makes for good ratings, though.

I'm looking forward to this new season. I want to see how these folks do at home - without Bob & Jillian...and a personal chef....

I agree - it was a much sweeter episode. And it brought me to tears when Jillian picked the older couple first, knowing they will be very hard to work with due to extreme health issues. But I think it will be a great season!

I have never watched it before, but think I am going to try to start this season. Watching people lose large amounts of weight is inspirational even when my weight loss needs are lower.

I completely agree with you about last season. The game play made it difficult to watch. I thought it was really unfair that some people seemed to be there for the money and weight loss was the bonus, and other contestants who were there for the right reasons were sent home early. I hope this season is different. It seems like these contestants are there to lose weight this time...lets just hope the game doesn't take over. I don't know how I feel about the twist though...but I guess they have to mix it up! I'm excited to see the transformations, they are so amazing every season.

I cried through about half of the show. Cried! I didn't like last season because of VICKY. Icky is what I call her. But I wish her well. I hope she, along with the others keep the weight off. But Yes, I'm excited about this new season.

We always record the show and watch it later. You're right about the last season - I couldn't tolerate Vicki's manipulations. So I'm looking forward to checking out the new season. We'll get to it in the next couple days.
