I never post here. I'm going to try to make more of an effort, though, for I think I need the accountability.
At the end of my weight loss efforts, I weighed 129. I took a picture of the scale. That was the summer of 2007. I maintained that all winter. I had hernia surgery in the spring of 2008 and weighed 135 on the hospital scale. 5 pounds, not bad. Still better than the 210 I had started with.
I had a sever IT band injury in the fall of 2008 running a half marathon. I tore my calf muscle February 2009. I had a miscarriage May 2009. I severely pulled my piriformis muscle fall 2009.
I knew my weight was up but I purposely did not get on the scale. When I was trying to lose weight, I was obsessive about it. I weighed every.single.day, often three or more times in one day. I made myself crazy. So I stayed off the scale, and I knew that my weight was going up.
When I was in Grand Cayman this week, I went into the changing room at the gym. There was a scale there, and I stood in front of it for a good two minutes. Do I want to get on it, I thought to myself. I did, kind of. I was curious to know what I weighed. I knew, though, that the number had the power to ruin my entire weekend. If it was high, I'd obsess and fret about it nonstop. But I really did want to know, and so I made a promise to myself. No matter the number, it doesn't define you. It could say 170 and you are still lighter than you were 4 years ago. Your thighs are chunkier, yes, and your belly is looser. But you are strong and work out a lot, and if you aren't happy with that number, you have the power to change it. You know you haven't been the best with the food, so you know it's going to be high. Just get up there, already.
And so I did. 145.
I'm not going to lie and say that I love that number, but I'm ok with it. I know I need to get back to about 135-138, but I am glad to at least know where I stand.

You know, I used to get mad when people fussed over a few pounds. I sit here needing to lose over 100 pounds and others are complaining over 10 or 15. I learned a couple of things though. One was that my sister law who has a petite frame shared with me once that 10 pounds can feel like a lot when you are petite. I realized that 10 pounds didn't affect me the way it does others. The second thing I realized was that since I lost 12 pounds I worry about gaining it back. I still need to lose about 110 pounds but I stress over regaining those 12 back. (I have been stuck at 260 for a year, I believe.) It dawned on me the other day that I will stress about regaining no matter where I am at in my weightloss/health. So what I am trying to say Carmen is that while it is "only 16 pounds", that may really be difficult for you mentally and physically. I hope that you are able to lose whatever you need to so that you feel good again. The good news is that you very well could reach your goal within 2 or 3 months. That is encouraging. When I look at how am I going to lose 110 pounds (or more, depending how my body feels) then I get really overwhelmed. Lack of fitness, too much fatigue, being undisciplined and simply not knowing where to start seem to keep me in this cycle of fear. I wanted to lose the 100 this year but it is already the middle of April. I would be shocked if I actually lost 50 pounds by the end of the year. At this point I would take 25.
Wishing you the best. Take care -

Since hubby has been sick he's down to 166. I will not get on the scale because if I'm over 160 that's too close for me and I'd just rather not know.

i'm very impressed at what you've kept off, but remember this battle is a lifetime! I need to lose a LOT, I need to get on the scale :(

It took a lot of courage to get on that scale and that's the first step, Carmen. Don't beat yourself up. Just start from today.

I didn't have a scale for a long time and it was a mistake. Weight's a good indicator of how you're doing overall health wise...
I'm glad you got on. :)
{saw you on blogher}

I think that scale is really a good motivator if you are working hard about your weight. it will be really nice to know your progress.

Tks for sharing..
I think weight loss and fitness always boil down to 2 things: 1) Metabolism and 2) Nutrition.
Metabolism: You worked to expend the excess calories so that they do not turn into fats. To do that, either you create a calories deficit or you increase your calories usage.
For most cutting calories (aka reduce portion size) is easier but not everyone can withstand the hunger pangs. That's when a hoodia gordonii supplement can be useful as it make your brain think you are full so that you won't feel lethargic or cranky.
For those who prefer to exercise, you should focus on weight training and high intensity interval training like wind sprinting. Forget about cardio.
Nutrition: First thing is to get the habit of reading labels. If you see anything that says high fructose corn syrup, trans fat, hydrogenated or partial hydrogenated oil, put it back.
Next understand that you need to eat a balance meal, and not follow a fad diet. One that contains carbohydrates, protein and fat.
Opt for unprocessed carbs and when possible, it's better to take fruits (not fruit juice) and vegetables. Technically speaking, fruit and vegetables are less calories dense. Good for losing weight.
Get your plant protein from beans, legumes, and nuts, while animal protein, eat free-range and/or organic meats.
Get this straight, we need fat. And the right kind of fats would make you fat. What we need is natural fats from fishes like salmon and tout or fruits like avocado.
When you need oil, use coconut oils and pure virgin olive oils.
By the way, for the ladies and gentlemen out there, avoid soy based products and beer.
Guys, soy and beer (contains estrogenic compounds) cause fats to accumulate on your chest. So unless you are interest to grow boobs continue eating.
Ladies, one of the reasons why your stubborn belly fat never go away could be due to your high intake of soy based product and beer.
Oops, I blah too much on a blog post! That's it. :)

Hi! I'm super late to the party. :) I found your blog this past week and just finished reading it from beginning to end! (I'm a little sad I caught up.) You've been so inspiring! I've got a good 40 lbs+ to lose, but I am on the right track this time. Thank you! (I hope you'll keep updating this blog - I love it!)
